Your learning will include:
- Work safely and follow WHS policies and work procedures
- Communication in the workplace
- Prepare to implement traffic management plan
- Prepare to control traffic
- Position and program portable traffic control devices
- Control traffic and operate communication devices
- Apply risk management
- Close down work activities
Course requirements:
- 17 years of age
- 100 points of ORIGINAL ID including 1 Photo ID on the day (download flyer below for ID Checklist) You will not be allowed to commence the Course if you cannot provide acceptable ID documents. No exceptions
- Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number. Go to www.usi.gov.au to register
- Appropriate clothing (high vis, long sleeves) hat and work boots
- Basic computer skills are required.
- Some assessment tasks are completed electronically on our e-learning platform. You will be provided with suitable technology (e.g. Chrome Book) for the Course duration.
- If you are not a confident computer user, please advise our Office before the commencement of your Course. Hand written assessment alternatives are available.

Your learning outcomes will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to:
- Identify safety implications of traffic control at road works and personal responsibilities
- Set up, monitor and close down traffic control devices
- Operate a two-way radio correctly and effectively
- Check, clean and store equipment on completion of work and close down a TGS/TMP
- Know the basic function of the TGS/TMP system
- Locate and apply required documentation required for traffic management
and required legislation, regulations, codes and procedures. - Adapt to all work health and safety (WHS) and operational requirements
- Use the site/location assessment, distinguish topographical landmarks and carry out authorised risk control
- Conduct an onsite check of a TGS/TMP to identify any unexpected risks/hazards
- Plan for emergencies that may arise
- Ensure spacing between signs and traffic control devices is in line with a TGS/TMP
- Understand speed, environment, type and class of vehicles, traffic density, sight lines, environmental conditions, weather patterns and surface type
- Maintain traffic incident reports
- Monitor traffic controllers
- Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances
- Monitor traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes
- Maintain traffic incident reports
- Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site
- Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements
- Carry out risk assessments for personal safety
- Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
- Use communication methods and devices
- Conform to traffic control policy and procedures

This COMBO Course runs over three days and is for people wanting to work as a Traffic Controller setting up traffic control signs and devices and implementing traffic guidance systems. Successful participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the seven units of competency listed below and a SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training card.
